Nations Unraveled: Untold Stories Across Continents

October 30, 2017

Join us on October 30th at North Plaza from 1 pm to 5 pm for our Launch Event, Nations Unraveled: Untold Stories Across Continents!!
The purpose of the event is to highlight a conflict afflicted nation from a wide variety of regions in the world, and spotlight the history of the people, the culture, the food, the educational contributions, and people of that particular nation in order to illuminate a narrative about the identity of people who are from that origin, which is often lost within newscasts about war and victimhood.
We have various tables where people would showcase art/history/food/culture from their region of representation, and talk about what the country was like prior to the conflict, how they envision the country now and what a bright future may look like ahead.

We believe everyone has a story to tell and this is an opportunity for people to share what makes them special and empower individuals to be proud of their heritage beyond the war/conflict that their country of heritage/or current nation may be marred by.

Stand Up for Someone's Rights Campaign

UNA-USA and the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) have partnered to promote the new “Stand Up for Someone’s Rights” campaign in 2017-2018. The goal of the partnership is to empower a new generation of people in the U.S. to creatively amplify what they do in their daily lives to defend human rights as well engage their decision makers on human rights.

The “Stand Up for Someone’s Rights” campaign is inspired by former First Lady and UNA-USA trailblazer Eleanor Roosevelt and her famous observation: “Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home.” Launched by the UN Human Rights Office, the campaign is a reminder that human rights “start with each of us” and our communities standing together against intolerance, injustice, and discrimination. At its heart “Stand Up” seeks to raise awareness about the essential role of human rights in people’s everyday lives, and encourages people to support the human rights of others, in their communities and with their decision makers.  In doing so, says the UN Human Rights Office, “local actions can add up to a global movement.”

Action of the Month: Advocate with Congress to put Children First

We invite you to advocate for the world's children. We need your help to reach the policymakers in Washington on matters that affect the survival, protection, and development of children everywhere.

With the 115th Congress in session and President Trump’s Administration up and running in Washington, we are working to get the U.S. Government to put children first in their actions! As the funding for UNICEF in Fiscal Year 2018 is being decided, and bills are introduced or reintroduced in Congress, visit this page for recommendations on detailed ways to take action.

While we look ahead to Fiscal Year 2018, we are excited that the U.S. Government’s contribution to UNICEF for Fiscal Year 2017 has been maintained at the $132.5 million level. This victory serves as a wonderful confirmation that our advocacy efforts across the country CAN make a difference! You can take this moment to show appreciation towards your Members of Congress for maintaining the funding for UNICEF this year. Send a tweet to thank them for putting #childrenfirst!

Want to do more? Sign a petition or send a letter to your Senators or Representative on global children's issues advanced by UNICEF. To deepen your involvement as an effective advocate for UNICEF, consider joining a Congressional Action Team.

Much will be at stake for the children we seek to serve and we encourage your advocacy.
